The area around the two cities of Trieste and Udine borders Austria and Slovenia. Friuli is particularly determined by two climatic factors, on the one hand the mild Mediterranean climate, on the other hand the cold air currents from the Alps. Ideal conditions for white wines, which are predominantly cultivated here. Friuli is divided into three sub-regions: the two quite high quality regions of Colli Orientali and Collio, and the Grave del Friuli region, where simpler wines grow on alluvial soils. The main white wine varieties are Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Picolit; among the reds, Refosco, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Nero dominate, but some Ribolla is also grown here.
