Glera is a white variety grape characterized by large berries greenish-yellow in color, high yield, floral and fruity aromas. 90% of the cultivation of Glera takes place in Italy in the province of Treviso, smaller vineyards can also be found in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Slovenia and even in Argentina. Glera is predominantly used for the production of sparkling wines that depending on the winemaking process can lead to Prosecco, Spumante, and Frizzante. Previously, the grape variety was called the same as the designation of origin "Prosecco", which led to some confusion and many Prosecco plagiarisms from other regions. For this reason, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture issued a new and clear regulation in 2009. The name of the grape variety was changed to "Glera" and the name of the wine region to "DOC Prosecco".
