Valle Central

Valle Central

Details

The vast Central Valley region stretches south from Santiago between the coastal ranges and the Andes and is sub-divided into the Maipo, Rapel, Curicó and Maule Valleys. This large vineyard area is mostly sheltered from maritime influences by the coastal ranges, and grapes grow prolifically on the warm, fertile, well-irrigated plains, making the Central Valley the country’s viticultural heartland. A dry, warm and sunny growing season offers perfect conditions for producing the ripe, fruity red wines which have made Chile so successful on export markets. However, where there are gaps in the coastal ranges, fogs and cool breezes from the Pacific can enter the valley and moderate temperatures. From cooler subzones with coastal-influenced or higher-altitude vineyards comes also a significant range of white wines which retain their bright acidity and freshness. Grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carménère for the reds, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites. The Central Valley produces the vast majority of Chilean wines.
