Marche

The region with the capital Ancona is located in the center of Italy on the Adriatic coast. Viticulture in Marche has a long tradition that probably dates back to the time of the Celts. The warm Mediterranean climate and the limestone soils from marine sediments, similar to Tuscany, actually provide good conditions for viticulture. From Marche come the ancestors of the three famous winemaking families Catena Zapata (Argentina), Gallo and Mondavi (California), who emigrated to the American continent and founded wine-growing empires. The vineyards are almost exclusively located on slopes with often clayey soil.
