The family winery is now in its 5th generation and is run by Franz Xaver (F.X.) and his son Lucas. Around 20 hectares of vineyards are cultivated, 50% are planted with Grüner Veltliner, 48% with Riesling and 1% each with Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller. The basis for the outstanding quality of the wines was laid by Franz Pichler Senior, who began the strict selection of Grüner Veltliner as early as 1928 by focusing on small-berried grapes that, although lower in yield, provided higher extract and denser aromatics. Authenticity is the family's credo. They want to press wines that are an exact reflection of the year, the soil and the special microclimate of the Wachau. The fine nuances of each site should be perceptible and recognisable in their multi-layered uniqueness. The prerequisites for this are pure manual harvesting in several passes of the highest quality, physiologically ripest grapes, gentle processing and traditional ageing of the wines in 30 to 40-year-old large oak barrels and consistent renunciation of any enrichment, fining and concentration.
